32-year-old drowns at Sharjah beach

SHARJAH // A man drowned at Khor Fakkan beach on Friday. A helicopter from the Ministry of Interior helped retrieve the 32-year-old Filipino’s body from the water.

The victim worked for a water sports company and was in a small rubber boat that was being towed by a speed boat when he fell into the water and drowned, according to police.

The driver of the speed boat tried unsuccessfully to rescue the man then returned to the shore to call for help at 4.45pm.

The Filipino was not wearing a life jacket, police added.

A search-and-rescue operation took 45 minutes to recover the body with the help of a diver from a hotel on Khor Fakkan.

Sharjah Police urged people to wear life jackets when participating in water sports.
