DUBAI // An employee of the RTA's Traffic Department, who was found guilty of cancelling Dh1.19 million in traffic fines for five men and taking Dh593,860 in bribes, was sentenced this morning to two years in prison and fined Dh80,000.
The Dubai Criminal Court of First Instance was told the incident happened between January 2, 2008, and February 19, 2009, when the employee SA, 23, who worked in the control technologies section, used passwords of three employees to log into the system and cancel the fines.
The five men whose fines were cancelled, three Emiratis, an Iranian and an Omani, were acquitted. The Emirati men worked for the police, customs department and Ministry of Interior; the other two worked for private companies.
Records said SA scrapped violations including speeding and jumping a red light.
When the five people found their fines had been cancelled, they paid SA half the value of the fines, records said.
