An Emirati man found guilty of physically and verbally assaulting two police officers while drunk has been sentenced to six months in prison.
Dubai Criminal Court heard how the incident happened at a hotel in the city on the evening of September 14.
Officers arrived to find the 37-year-old man, who was bleeding heavily from his arm, being led out of the premises by a woman.
The court heard that as they called for an ambulance, the defendant attacked both policemen, forcing them to take him into custody.
“It was 12.45am when we arrived and saw the accused, along with a woman, coming out of the hotel,” an officer told the hearing.
“We also noticed he was very drunk. While inside the patrol car he continued to curse us using very bad language and threatened to beat us up.”
One of the police officers was later taken to Al Baraha Hospital to have his hand treated.
Iftar programme at the Sheikh Mohammed Centre for Cultural Understanding
Established in 1998, the Sheikh Mohammed Centre for Cultural Understanding was created with a vision to teach residents about the traditions and customs of the UAE. Every year during Ramadan, an iftar programme is rolled out. This allows guests to break their fast with the centre’s presenters, visit a nearby mosque and observe their guides while they pray. These events last for about two hours and are open to the public, or can be booked for a private event.
Until the end of Ramadan, the iftar events take place from 7pm until 9pm, from Saturday to Thursday. Advanced booking is required.
