SHARJAH // An 18-year-old Emirati was killed and nine other people injured in a seven-car pile-up at the weekend.

The victim, A M A, and the injured – all Emiratis – were involved in the accident at 6pm on Friday in the central region of Sharjah, police said.

Emergency crews and traffic patrols rescued two people who were trapped in their car.

A 27-year-old man suffered serious injuries, while his 25-year-old wife and two-year-old son were slightly hurt.

The accident happened after a 4x4 swerved and hit a car travelling in the opposite lane in Al Fayeh, said police.

The accident caused a pile-up in which one car flipped over and landed on a parked vehicle.

A M A was taken to hospital, where he died of his injuries on Saturday.

Police said excessive speed and a lack of attention were to blame for the crash.

The injured were taken to Al Dhaid Hospital and Rashid Hospital in Dubai for treatment.

Col Haran Mubarak, acting director of central region police, urged people to abide by traffic laws.

“We ask motorists to drive carefully. The country is witnessing a large turnout of families and tourists now that the weather is better,” he said.
