Egyptian Muslim Brotherhood politician fails to attend UAE trial

ABU DHABI // An Egyptian Muslim Brotherhood politician accused of insulting the UAE failed to attend his trial in the State Security Division of the Federal Supreme Court as he is imprisoned in his home country.

Essam Al Arian’s charges of publicly insulting the UAE and its rulers and threatening the country’s peace, stem from an appearance on an Egyptian television show on June 18, 2013.

He is currently awaiting trial in his Egypt after being arrested on October 29 on suspicion of publicly inciting protesters to be killed and other violent acts.

Prosecutors said a formal letter from the Egyptian prime minister stated that the defendant was imprisoned and hence could not attend his trial in the UAE.

Judge Falah Al Hajeri requested the court to contact the relevent authorities have Al Arian declared as wanted and adjourned the case to July 6.
