DUBAI // An Egyptian man sent death threats to his estranged wife on Facebook after she returned to the country without his knowledge, the criminal court heard on Sunday.
Prosecutors say that on February 21 this year, M A, 33, messaged his wife’s Facebook account stating: “I swear by my father’s soul that I will kill you. This way you are seeking your own death and I will get you. I will get you, it is your end and nothing will calm me down except killing you.”
The wife, W M, 29 testified that there were many problems in their marriage. M A had often physically assaulted her and she had recently filed for a divorce.
In September last year, W M said she went to Egypt to undergo a surgery, then returned to the UAE on February 16 this year without informing her husband.
“A few days later when I checked my Facebook account, I read his message and directly headed to the Muraqqabat police station and reported him,” she said.
She added that his threats were not accompanied with any demands nor did it result from any recent arguments.
M A was in court on Sunday but did not enter a plea to the charges of threatening to kill his wife.
The verdict will be announced on May 13.
