DUBAI // An inmate jailed for four years for trying to bribe a police officer with Tramadol pills has had his sentence extended by three months for starting a fire in his prison cell.

Dubai Criminal Court heard that Emirati M B, 28, set a blanket alight in his cell at Dubai Central Prison on February 26 last year. Prosecutors said the blaze damaged the cell and its contents, costing the prison Dh1,198 in repairs.

M B was sentenced to four years and fined Dh1,000 in January last year for consumption of Tramadol and offering a police officer the pills as a bribe while being held at Rashidiya police station.

Last April, he was sentenced to an additional year in jail and handed a Dh20,000 fine for possession of 5,000 Tramadol pills with the intent to sell.

M B did not attend his court hearing to enter a plea against charges of causing the fire.
