DUBAI // An unemployed alcoholic drug-user was on Thursday morning found guilty of raping his mentally impaired mother over a four-year period.

The man, a 37-year-old Emirati, will spend five years in jail on the rape charge and will pay a fine of Dh2,000 for the illegal consumption of alcohol.

He had taken advantage of his 55-year-old mother’s deteriorating health since 2010 by sexually assaulting her and threatening to beat her up if she refused, prosecutors told the court.

According to court documents, a severe epileptic episode led to permanent damage to some of the mother’s brain tissue, which in turn had resulted in deterioration of her intelligence and a slowing of her perception and thinking process.

On May 15 last year the man dragged his mother into her room, took off her clothes and raped her after drinking six bottles of alcohol. Records did not say what type of drink it was.

The family’s housemaid reported the incident to the man’s younger brother, who beat him up, then called police.

Another brother told prosecutors the man was an alcoholic and took drugs. “He had been sexually assaulting our mother since 2010 – I caught him once in that year when I saw through his room window,” the brother said.

“She told me herself what happened several times.”

A medical report confirmed that the man was mentally competent and aware of his actions, but his mother was not.
