DUBAI // A Dh2 billion drainage system is to be constructed around Al Maktoum International airport to collect rain and surface groundwater and then discharge it back into the Gulf.
The Dubai Municipality project, which will cover an urban area of 400 sq km, will begin in 2016.
Hussein Nasser Lutah, director general of the municipality. told Al Ittihad, the sister newspaper of The National, that the project was the first of its kind in the Middle East.
He said the water would be collected in deep tunnels before being flowed into the sea.
