DUBAI // A security guard got drunk in a friend’s house then went into a nearby restaurant and smashed the place up, the Court of Misdemeanours heard on Sunday.

Nigerian O L, 40, arrived at the restaurant on June 1 at about 5pm and, despite the manager’s attempts to persuade him to leave, he loitered around.

“I noticed he was not normal and then knew he was drunk so I tried to get him to leave but he wouldn’t,” said Ethiopian A H, 33, the restaurant’s manager.

She said he then broke the glass door of the restaurant and threw chairs around, damaging some of them.

“He was standing by the door and teasing me saying that if I wanted to catch him I should try. I could smell alcohol on him so I asked him to stay out of the place but he came inside and waved some of the chairs in the air before throwing them at the door and breaking it into pieces,” said A H.

Police arrived and saw a crowd of people surrounding the defendant, trying to restrain him.

O L then managed to escape police but was shortly arrested.

A H said that this was the first time she had ever seen this man at her restaurant, adding he caused nearly Dh3,000 worth of damage.

“I had drinks with a friend then I left but I could not remember what I did because I was drunk. I am willing to pay them the cost of the damage I caused,” said O L.

He was convicted of consuming alcohol without a licence and was fined Dh1,000.

The Bio

Favourite holiday destination: Either Kazakhstan or Montenegro. I’ve been involved in events in both countries and they are just stunning.

Favourite book: I am a huge of Robin Cook’s medical thrillers, which I suppose is quite apt right now. My mother introduced me to them back home in New Zealand.

Favourite film or television programme: Forrest Gump is my favourite film, that’s never been up for debate. I love watching repeats of Mash as well.

Inspiration: My late father moulded me into the man I am today. I would also say disappointment and sadness are great motivators. There are times when events have brought me to my knees but it has also made me determined not to let them get the better of me.
