DUBAI // A drunk woman who hitchhiked her way home was arrested and charged with consuming alcohol after she refused to have sex with the driver who picked her up, Dubai Court of Misdemeanours heard.

Moroccan S H, 38, who works at a clinic in Dubai, told prosecutors that on November 9 she spent nearly six hours at a hotel in Al Muraqqabat, Deira, drinking different alcoholic drinks. “I went there at nearly 1am and had whisky and beer, as I recall, then after about six hours I wanted to go home,” she said.

“I waited for a taxi but couldn’t find one, then a car pulled over and the driver told me that he could drive me home, so I said OK.”

The driver took her to Al Nahda instead of driving her back to her home in Sharjah. She said that on the way, the driver, whose nationality and age were not available, tried to take her to his home because, he told her, he wanted to have sex with her.

“I refused and then we argued, so he called police and a patrol came shortly after and took me to the police station,” said the woman.

From there she was taken to the criminal laboratory because officers noticed she had been drinking. The blood test confirmed she was drunk and the woman was charged with consuming alcohol without a licence. No explanation was given as to why the man was not questioned or charged.

Records show this was not the first time she had been charged with the same offence. She was convicted and fined Dh2,000.
