DUBAI // Nearly Dh73.5 million worth of aid has been given out to 135,000 displaced Syrian families in Lebanon.
About 85 per cent of this total donation has been distributed as part of a project by the Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan Foundation, which aims to give families Dh550 worth of coupons each.
Lebanese and Palestinian families displaced by the civil war in Syria will also benefit.
More than 260,000 displaced Syrian families in various countries have been helped by the foundation since the outbreak of the war in 2011. The charity has also provided mobile hospital camps to help the refugees.
The project reflects the Government's support of the Syrian people, the foundation said.
Eid Al Mazrouei, head of the charity's delegation in Lebanon, said its efforts were "a duty towards the brotherly Syrian people in their difficult time".
"The implementation of the project comes within the directives of President Sheikh Khalifa to pay attention to all displaced people from Syria," he said, according to the state news agency Wam. "The project is one of the largest and most important projects of relief for the displaced Syrians in Lebanon."
The UAE has pledged Dh1.1 billion in aid to Syrian refugees and is administering the funds directly.
Projects include a Dh12m camp made up of caravans capable of housing more than 6,000 families.
Twenty volunteers from the UAE are also working at Syrian refugee camps in various countries.
