DUBAI // Two shoplifters who used a blade and screwdrivers to remove magnetic tags from clothes in Debenhams before stealing them have been jailed for three months each.

The Iranian women, P D, 25, and M J, 40, were arrested when a security guard suspected they were up to something and he found clothes in their possession without a receipt.

Both women were charged with stealing seven pieces of clothes from the department store at Deira City Centre.

Filipino shop manager R A, 40, testified that the pair came into the store on August 30 and chose some items before heading to the fitting rooms.

“They stashed the clothes inside their bags and, as they tried to get out of the shop, they were caught as they could not present a receipt,” said R A.

He said camera recordings were studied and it was found that the women took clothes into the fitting rooms and were not seen in possession with them when they left. The clothes were not found in the fitting rooms.

Policeman N A, 28, said that the women were searched at the shop at about 10.30pm and a blade and screwdriver were found in their possession.

“They then confessed willingly to stealing the clothes,” said the officer.

However, they both denied a charge of theft at Dubai Criminal Court.

Both will be deported after the completion of their jail terms.
