DUBAI // Two brothers who conspired to murder their sister’s husband because he married her against their family’s will were sentenced to death on Wednesday.
The Pakistanis, aged 34 and 26, planned the murder in November last year after the husband convinced their sister to run away and marry him despite her family’s objections.
The eldest brother killed the man by beating him and then strangling him with a rope at a quiet, sandy area in Al Satwa.
The killer fled the country.
He was charged with premeditated murder in absentia, while his younger brother was charged with conspiracy to commit murder, which he denied in February at Dubai Criminal Court.
A policeman said the victim’s body was found wedged between the front and back seats of a taxi.
The forensic report said he had died from strangulation outside the car before the body was dragged inside.
The victim’s brother filed a police report after he received a call from his cousin inquiring about the victim’s whereabouts.
“I heard rumours about the murder and also that the killer fled to Pakistan after the killing,” said the cousin.
The victim’s brother started a search but failed to find his sibling and filed the report, at which point he was told that his brother’s body had been found.
Officers tracked down the younger defendant, who was a taxi driver and lived near to where the body was found.
It was unclear whether the body was found in his taxi.
Police said that he confessed and told them that he and his brother decided to kill the man in Pakistan but his brother then killed him in the UAE before taking a flight back to Pakistan.
He said that his family called him to confirm that his brother had arrived in Pakistan after killing their sister’s husband.
The brothers were both sentenced to death but the eldest was sentenced in his absence. An arrest warrant was issued.

Although social media can be harmful to our mental health, paradoxically, one of the antidotes comes with the many social-media accounts devoted to normalising mental-health struggles. With Hope UAE is one of them.
The group, which has about 3,600 followers, was started three years ago by five Emirati women to address the stigma surrounding the subject. Via Instagram, the group recently began featuring personal accounts by Emiratis. The posts are written under the hashtag #mymindmatters, along with a black-and-white photo of the subject holding the group’s signature red balloon.
“Depression is ugly,” says one of the users, Amani. “It paints everything around me and everything in me.”
Saaed, meanwhile, faces the daunting task of caring for four family members with psychological disorders. “I’ve had no support and no resources here to help me,” he says. “It has been, and still is, a one-man battle against the demons of fractured minds.”
In addition to With Hope UAE’s frank social-media presence, the group holds talks and workshops in Dubai. “Change takes time,” Reem Al Ali, vice chairman and a founding member of With Hope UAE, told The National earlier this year. “It won’t happen overnight, and it will take persistent and passionate people to bring about this change.”
