DUBAI // A businessman who spent more than Dh16,000 on a credit card he obtained using a forged Australian passport and other official documents was sentenced to a year in jail.

The 28-year-old Pakistani applied for the Majid Al Futtaim Finance najm credit card from the Bur Saeed branch and he provided a fake passport and identity card.

He is said to have given employees at Majid Al Futtaim finance department a false name and workplace.

When the card provider tried to contact the man at the place of his supposed work, the company denied any knowledge of him and police were alerted.

“He said he worked at Dubai International Airport and provided a work ID,” said a Yemeni witness, 29.

After obtaining the card in September 2015, which was delivered to an address in Discovery Gardens, the defendant used it to buy items worth Dh16,773 without repaying the amount.

Police said the name and passport details given by the man did not match any in the country’s residency data system.

In February at Dubai Criminal Court he denied charges of forgery, use of forged documents and fraudulently buying items using a credit card that was obtained unlawfully.

However, he has been convicted and sentenced to a year in jail, followed by deportation.
