Tenant assaulted over brothel complaint, Dubai court hears

Two Bangladeshis assaulted a 68-year-old Syrian man who told them to stop using his apartment building as a brothel, a court heard today.

DUBAI // Two men assaulted a 68-year-old man who told them to stop using his apartment building as a brothel, a court heard today.

GA, from Syria, told the Dubai Criminal Court that he noticed the two Bangladeshis SA, 22, and AD, 24, drumming up business for their prostitutes as they stood outside the building in Faree Eyal Nasser on December 30, 2011.

"They often caused problems for the building's tenants, they would offer sex services to passers-by and most of their customers would be drunk," he told the court.

He asked both men to walk away from building's entrance they refused. When he persisted, one of the men yelled at him before punching him in the face.

The other man then hit him with a metal bar, but the tenant managed to shield himself from the blow by raising his hand. A number of men in the area then rushed to the tenant's rescue and called the police.

The injury to the tenant's hand was described in a medical report as a permanent one per cent disability.

Prosecutors charged the two Bangladeshis with assault and causing a permanent disability. They denied the charge.

"We would swear on the Quran that we did not do anything," both of them told the court through a translator.

A verdict is expected on September 3.
