DUBAI // An unemployed expatriate from Pakistan who called 999 more than 100 times to tell police he wanted to go home will have his wish granted.
R?S, 53, will be deported after serving his three-month jail term, the Court of Misdemeanours ruled yesterday.
He was arrested on January 20 and charged with abusing telecommunications and creating a disturbance in the Dubai Police operations room.
He came to the country nearly 31 years ago and worked in Ras Al Khaimah for 15 years before moving to work for Dubai Police.
“I was absent for a few days and when I came back to work I discovered they had cancelled my residency and terminated my services,” he said. “Ever since, I wasn’t able to find another job.
“I want to go home to Pakistan but I don’t have the money for a ticket and other expenses so I decided to make calls and disturb police so that I would be arrested then deported. That was the only way I could fly back home.”
R?S told the court the 999 operators warned him against calling again and told him he could face criminal charges. “I knew if they charged me I would be in court and the court would order my deportation so I could return to my homeland,” he added.
