ABU DHABI // Two men were yesterday sentenced to six months in jail and three others for a year after being found guilty of raping a 14-year-old girl.
One of the men had sex with the girl, an Emirati, after contacting her on Facebook and arranging to meet her in Dubai. Afterwards she called another friend - who she had also met on Facebook - to help her. But when he arrived he took her to an Al Ain hotel where he and a friend held her captive for two days and also had sex with her. These two were sentenced to year-long prison terms on the grounds they held the girl captive.
Following this ordeal the girl called another man she knew, HB, a policeman. But he and his brother, also a policeman, took her to the desert and had sex with her.
The five men were charged with rape as the girl was judged too young to have consented to the acts. All the men, who are Emirati, denied the charges.
A defence lawyer said they should be found guilty of consensual sex because in hijri (Islamic calendar) years the girl was older than 14.
