DUBAI // Four men have been charged with endangering lives after police caught them replacing sell-by date stickers on two tonnes of meat.
An alert has been issued for the arrest of an Ajman food company owner believed to be the ringleader of the alleged scam, Yousef Foulaz, chief prosecutor for Deira First District, said yesterday.
Al Rashidiya police received a tip from a lorry owner, who had rented his vehicle to an Arab national, that the lorry was being used to transport expired meat, said Al Rashidiya and Qusais Districts chief prosecutor Younis al Bloushi.
Officers said they caught four Bangladeshi men on January 25 in the act of changing the stickers. They said they were employed on a monthly salary by the food company owner, and directed police to several warehouses where he stored frozen meat that was past its sell-by date, Mr al Bloushi said.
The four men were charged with forging official documents and endangering lives, and prosecutors are awaiting a forensics report before beginning court proceedings.
