ABU DHABI // An expatriate died at his hotel swimming pool just four days after arriving in the country to earn money for his family in his home country.
Jordanian NS drowned at the Abu Dhabi pool, which was not manned by a lifeguard, after arriving in the UAE to start a job as a trainee engineer at a petrochemical company in the capital. His company had put him up in the hotel.
The man's elderly parents were at Abu Dhabi Civil Court today to demand Dh10 million in compensation from the hotel, as they have lost their only breadwinner.
The manager of the hotel, which was not named in court records, said he was out of the country when the incident happened and so was unable to provide much information.
Prosecutors intend to launch a criminal case against the hotel for not having a lifeguard on duty once the civil case comes to a close.
The second hearing in the civil case has been scheduled for next week.
