DUBAI // A Filipino accountant has been sentenced to six months in jail after he confessed to using an iPhone to record a woman using the bathroom of a mixed-sex apartment. RB, 29, was charged with sexual assault after prosecutors presented video evidence downloaded from his handset showing him placing the phone inside a fabric pouch, which he nailed to the bathroom door hidden behind a dressing gown that had a hole in it.

His victim, ME, a 28-year-old Filipina, told prosecutors that her sister had been suspicious that she was being recorded after spotting the device. ME said that she later spotted the camera lens behind the gown that was hanging on the door. When she looked more closely, she discovered that the phone's video camera had been recording for 31 minutes. The victim said she found photos of their male roommate on the phone and video of him hiding the phone in the bathroom, which led her to report the case to police.

In a similar voyeurism case in March, a supermarket worker was sentenced to three months in jail after he recorded secret videos of his female colleague using the toilet at their workplace. The UAE penal code prosecutes defendants who violate privacy through the use of film, a crime carrying a maximum 15-year sentence. @Email:amustafa@thenational.ae
