Abu Dhabi man convicted of embezzling Dh57,000 from employer

ABU DHABI // A man who embezzled Dh57,000 from his employer was fined Dh5,000 and had his case referred to the civil court.

MB, from Syria, was accused of embezzling more than Dh1 million during the 35 years he worked for the insurance company, but he claimed the company was suing him only to get out of paying his end of service benefit - he resigned in September 2011 and his end of service benefit was worth about Dh350,000.

The company filed the lawsuit against him during his one month notice period.

The Misdemeanour Court acquitted him, so the company appealed and the Appeals Court referred the case to an expert committee. That committee found he had embezzled Dh57,000, so the Appeals Court sentenced him to a Dh5,000 fine and referred the case to the Civil Court.

The verdict is subject to further appeal at the Cassation Court.
