ABU DHABI // The parents of a labourer who died on a construction site do not deserve compensation as they are still young enough to work, the Civil Appeals Court ruled today.
The parents had previously been granted Dh100,000 in compensation in addition to blood money after their son was electrocuted by a machine described as "dangerous" and faulty by his supervisor.
The Criminal Court found the company guilty of causing the death through negligence and ordered it to pay the family blood money of Dh200,000. The first instance Civil Court granted them an additional Dh100,000 in compensation for losing their financial provider.
But the civil court's verdict was appealed by the company, and the appeals court ruled that the mother, 38, and father, 42, were young enough to work, so their son was not their only source of income.
It also ruled that the blood money awarded by the Criminal Court served as both punishment for the company and compensation for the parents.
