DUBAI // A driver for a children’s toy company denied stealing Dh70,000 worth of goods and selling them for half price to line his own pockets.
Pakistani D A, 26, was arrested in September last year after his employer found out about thefts that had been taking place since 2010.
The Indian partner in the Al Qusais toy company, A W, 35, testified at Dubai Criminal Court that the defendant was hired in 2010 as a driver to deliver shipments across the UAE.
“He would present bills for each order delivered but in September last year we carried out an inventory and discovered the missing items,” said A W.
“Then we found out that he had been stealing because he showed signs of sudden wealth.”
The partner said internal investigations revealed that the Pakistani had just bought a new car and when he was questioned about the missing toys he stalled and then disappeared.
“He stopped coming to work so we reported the incident to police and told them about our suspicions concerning D A,” said the Indian.
“Then it was discovered he was selling them to other shops for less prices and the police took the testimony of the owner of one of these shops, who confirmed that D A sold him the toys.”
The court heard that he had taken the warehouse key without the knowledge of the guard and made a copy. He would then go late at night and steal the toys, it was said.
DA denies the charges and a verdict is due on November 24.
