Time Frame: A blast from the past (again)

  • English
  • Arabic

If this image seems familiar to our more dedicated readers, it is because it was the first Time Frame to appear in The National, almost exactly four years ago.

Since then, the series has published over 200 photographs, illuminating familiar, and sometimes less familiar insights into the country’s history.

Shown here is an early BP petrol station in Al Ain, taken by Gertude Dyck, the revered nurse at the city’s Oasis Hospital.

Thanks to what can only be described as serendipity, the actual anniversary of Time Frame, on May 8, sees the author of the series, James Langton, present Abu Dhabi in Photographs: Birth of a City in a public lecture for New York University Abu Dhabi.

The lecture will trace the story of Abu Dhabi as it transformed from a sleepy fishing city to a major Arab metropolis in the 1960s. It will feature some of the photographs from TimeFrame, but also several never seen before and some rare film footage.

Abu Dhabi in Photographs: Birth of a City will be held in the auditorium of the Intercontinental Hotel from 6.30pm to 8,00pm and admission is free.
