Body of Emirati student shot dead in Ohio to arrive in Abu Dhabi

ABU DHABI // The body of the Emirati student who was shot dead by a police officer in Ohio on Sunday will arrive in Abu Dhabi this evening.

Saif Nasser Al Ameri’s funeral will be held in Bani Yas on Friday where he will be buried in Bani Yas cemetery after funeral prayers at Al Rawashid Mosque following Friday prayers.

Al Ameri’s body was released by the Summit County medical examiner on Tuesday night after a post-mortem examination ­revealed the cause of the 26-year-old’s death to be a gunshot wound to the head and that the death was a homicide.

The officer involved in Al Ameri’s death was treated for minor injuries and is on paid leave pending the results of an investigation.

UAE Embassy officials represented Al Ameri’s family during meetings held with the Ohio bureau of criminal investigation on Wednesday.

Meanwhile, it has been reported by Sharjah TV that a team of officers from Abu Dhabi Police’s Criminal Investigation Department have been sent to Ohio to help the US authorities investigate the circumstances of Al Ameri’s death.

The officers have been sent in coordination with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation.

The ministry said it is still closely following investigations carried out by the police in Ohio in coordination with the UAE Embassy in Washington, and that an official more comprehensive statement will be issued at a later time, as soon as it receives more details from US authorities.
