Abu Dhabi Police wiped the black points off the licences of 833,000 motorists before the new traffic regulations came into effect on Saturday.

Police said they hoped the pardon would incentivise motorists to start afresh and adopt good driving habits.

Maj Suhail Al Qubaissi, head of traffic violations at Abu Dhabi Police, said the pardon was also made as part of the Year of Giving.

He said only minor offences were wiped from the licences. The pardon did not include dangerous traffic violations such as reckless driving, running red lights, over speeding or driving under the influence of alcohol, Maj Al Qubaisi said.

Motorists who benefitted from the pardon should improve their driving habits and keep their records clean of any black points and offences, he said.
