The Ministry of Interior announced today that 355 illegal residents have been captured during a crackdown campaign.
Those who were captured last week in the effort had violated the UAE law of entry and residency of foreigners. Of these, 166 were in Abu Dhabi, 96 in Al Ain, 53 in Ajman, and 40 in Ras Al Khaimah, the ministry said.
The Follow up Department of Illegal Residents and Foreigners in Abu Dhabi acted on a tipoff about a number of illegal residents in different areas of the emirate. The campaign resulted in the arrests of 166 people from Asia and Africa. Of these, 116 were men, and 50 were women found to be running away from their sponsors.
The Al Ain raid resulted in the capture of 96 illegal immigrants who were found without identification documents. Of these, 53 had illegally entered the UAE, 24 had violated the UAE law of entry and residency of foreigners, 14 had run away from their sponsors, and five were working for employers other than their sponsors.
In Ajman, the campaign led to the arrest of 40 people hailing from Asia and Africa, including 21 women working for employers other than their sponsors, and 19 who had run from their sponsors to work for others.
Maj Gen Nasser Al Awadi Al Menhali, assistant undersecretary for naturalisation, residency and ports affairs at the Ministry of Interior, said the campaigns were part of efforts to track down illegal residents. He also called on legal residents to report such violations because they are a security threat.

Islamophobia definition
A widely accepted definition was made by the All Party Parliamentary Group on British Muslims in 2019: “Islamophobia is rooted in racism and is a type of racism that targets expressions of Muslimness or perceived Muslimness.” It further defines it as “inciting hatred or violence against Muslims”.
What is the FNC?
The Federal National Council is one of five federal authorities established by the UAE constitution. It held its first session on December 2, 1972, a year to the day after Federation.
It has 40 members, eight of whom are women. The members represent the UAE population through each of the emirates. Abu Dhabi and Dubai have eight members each, Sharjah and Ras al Khaimah six, and Ajman, Fujairah and Umm Al Quwain have four.
They bring Emirati issues to the council for debate and put those concerns to ministers summoned for questioning.
The FNC’s main functions include passing, amending or rejecting federal draft laws, discussing international treaties and agreements, and offering recommendations on general subjects raised during sessions.
Federal draft laws must first pass through the FNC for recommendations when members can amend the laws to suit the needs of citizens. The draft laws are then forwarded to the Cabinet for consideration and approval.
Since 2006, half of the members have been elected by UAE citizens to serve four-year terms and the other half are appointed by the Ruler’s Courts of the seven emirates.
In the 2015 elections, 78 of the 252 candidates were women. Women also represented 48 per cent of all voters and 67 per cent of the voters were under the age of 40.
