The 3x3 Arab Women’s Basketball Tourmament completed its first day of competition on Monday in Sharjah, with teams from Egypt and Jordan leading the way.
The tournament, featuring 16 teams from seven Arab countries, is being played under the motto “Above the Rim, We Score” and highlighting women’s basketball in the region in the short form of hoops, featuring three players a side instead of five.
Jordanian teams Orthodox 2 and Al Fahees 1 and Egyptian sides Sporting Team 1 and 2 won each of the four groups and were seeded into the semi-finals. They edged out teams collectively from Bahrain, Iraq, UAE Lebanon, Palestine.
Local entries included UAE Sharjah and Sharjah Ladies Team, who each scored a win in group play, as well as UAE Central Region.
Jordan’s Orthodox 2 and Egypt’s Sporting 2 then advanced to the final, which will be contested on Tuesday.
The event also organised a three-point shootout, which was won by Jeena Hazem of Egypt’s Sporting 2 with six threes in a minute.
Khalid Al Hinai, the vice president of the UAE Basketball Federation and an official with basketball governing body Fiba’s 3x3 discipline, hailed the tournament as a “step forward in Arab women’s sports”.
“The Sharjah Ladies Club makes ever greater strides towards developing women’s sports through this competition,” said Al Hinai. “The tournament moves us closer to international recognition ... and gives Arab female athletes the opportunity to reach the status of professional players.
