The UAE resume their quest for a place at the 2018 World Cup this week, with Thailand kicking off a crucial qualification double-header. Here are the details.

Twin assignments

This is the third and final stage of qualification for Russia 2018. Mahdi Ali’s men host Thailand at the Mohammed bin Zayed Stadium in Abu Dhabi on Thursday night, before then travelling to Jeddah for what many expect to be a decisive encounter with Saudi Arabia on October 11.

Group situation

Two rounds have been played thus far in Group B. The UAE opened their campaign last month by registering a shock 2-1 victory against continental heavyweights Japan in Saitama. Five days later, they were defeated narrowly at home by Australia, with the reigning Asian champions securing a 1-0 win late on. The UAE currently sit fourth in the six-team group, with Australia leading on goal difference. The top two teams in the pool’s final standings automatically qualify, while the third-placed side must negotiate two play-off rounds to reach the World Cup. Iraq make up the rest of the group.

Thailand test

Ranked 135th in the world by Fifa, Thailand are attempting to qualify for their first World Cup. Managed by former star Kiatisuk Senamuang, they began this phase with two defeats, although they were unlucky to lose their opener against Saudi 1-0 after conceding a late penalty. Five days later, Thailand lost 2-0 at home to Japan. The UAE, who have qualified for a World Cup only once before, in 1990, will be expected to glean three points from Thursday’s match so they go to Jeddah in buoyant mood.

Ticket details

Last month's clash against Australia attracted a near-capacity crowd at the Mohammed bin Zayed Stadium, with the official attendance confirmed at 40,893. The UAE are hoping for another sell-out against Thailand. As well as normal tickets there are VIP and VIP Premier packages available at ticketmaster.ae. The match kicks off at 8pm.
