Stars 4, Jets 1
Dallas centre Tyler Seguin scored two goals and added two assists as the Stars beat the Winnipeg Jets 4-1.
The Stars showed no signs of rust after five days off, jumping out to a 3-0 lead after 20 minutes and cruising to victory in their first road game of the season.
Jamie Benn had a goal and two assists for the Stars, and rookie forward Alex Chiasson added his third goal of the season and had an assist.
Kings 2, Hurricanes 1 (SO)
Jeff Carter scored and Jonathan Quick improved his career record to 32-18 in shootouts as the Los Angeles Kings defeated the Carolina Hurricanes 2-1.
The Kings began a four-game road swing through the Southeast with a victory as Carter beat Cam Ward on a backhander as the second Kings shooter. Quick stopped Jeff Skinner, Alexander Semin and Nathan Gerbe in the shootout.
Carolina (2-2-1) has yet to score more than three goals in any of its first five games.
Coyotes 2, Flyers 1
Oliver Ekman-Larsson scored a power-play goal late in the second period to break a tie, Thomas Greiss made 36 saves and the Phoenix Coyotes beat the Philadelphia Flyers 2-1.
Rob Klinkhammer also scored a goal for the Coyotes (3-2), who won their second road game in two nights.
Max Talbot had the lone goal for the Flyers, who have only six goals this season, a big reason why the team is 1-4.
Panthers 6, Penguins 3
The Florida Panthers, playing their home opener and celebrating their 20th NHL season, hammered the Pittsburgh Penguins 6-3.
The Panthers scored twice in the second period to break at 2-2 tie and added a goal in the third to beat the previously undefeated Penguins.
Both teams used their backup goalies. The Penguins’ Jeff Zatkoff made his NHL debut, starting in place of Marc Andre-Fleury. For the Panthers, Jacob Markstrom replaced injured Panthers’ goalie Tim Thomas.
The Panthers improved to 2-3. The Penguins fell to 3-1.
Blackhawks 3, Islanders 2
Michal Handzus tapped in a rebound of Duncan Keith’s second period slap shot for the winning goal as the Chicago Blackhawks defeated the New York Islanders 3-2.
Keith’s shot came from just inside the blueline. Standing right in front of Islanders goalie Kevin Poulin, Handzus flicked the loose puck into the net at 6:45 of the middle period, a goal that would hold up the rest of the way as Chicago improved to 2-1-1.
New York (also 2-1-1) suffered their first loss of the young season.
Flames 3, Devils 2
Sean Monahan’s 19th birthday present came one day early as the sixth-overall selection in the 2013 draft scored for his fourth consecutive game and netted the biggest tally of them all so far, the third-period winner in Calgary’s 3-2 victory over the New Jersey Devils.
Monahan, who has points in five consecutive games to start his NHL career, quietly worked his way behind a pair of Devils defenders when fellow rookie Sven Baertschi spied him and fired a beautiful cross-ice pass for him to convert past Devils goalie Martin Brodeur.
It capped a see-saw game for a Flames team that opened the season with a 3-0-2 record after being pegged by most as a bottom feeder.

What is blockchain?
Blockchain is a form of distributed ledger technology, a digital system in which data is recorded across multiple places at the same time. Unlike traditional databases, DLTs have no central administrator or centralised data storage. They are transparent because the data is visible and, because they are automatically replicated and impossible to be tampered with, they are secure.
The main difference between blockchain and other forms of DLT is the way data is stored as ‘blocks’ – new transactions are added to the existing ‘chain’ of past transactions, hence the name ‘blockchain’. It is impossible to delete or modify information on the chain due to the replication of blocks across various locations.
Blockchain is mostly associated with cryptocurrency Bitcoin. Due to the inability to tamper with transactions, advocates say this makes the currency more secure and safer than traditional systems. It is maintained by a network of people referred to as ‘miners’, who receive rewards for solving complex mathematical equations that enable transactions to go through.
However, one of the major problems that has come to light has been the presence of illicit material buried in the Bitcoin blockchain, linking it to the dark web.
Other blockchain platforms can offer things like smart contracts, which are automatically implemented when specific conditions from all interested parties are reached, cutting the time involved and the risk of mistakes. Another use could be storing medical records, as patients can be confident their information cannot be changed. The technology can also be used in supply chains, voting and has the potential to used for storing property records.
