Tuesday cover: Hull City burning bright despite preseason doom and gloom

Hull City players David Meyler and Robert Snodgrass find themselves on The National Sport front page on Tuesday, August 23 as the promoted club have defied early expectations with successive wins in the Premier League.

Hull have endured the worst possible off-season. Manager Steve Bruce left the club, the owners are proactively trying to sell, no transfers have been completed, and due to a mounting injury crisis, Hull have started the season with just 13 fit senior players.

However, despite the doom and gloom off the pitch, caretaker manager Mike Phelan, the former assistant manager at Manchester United under Alex Ferguson, has guided Hull to wins over champions Leicester City and Swansea City.

Richard Jolly, in his weekly Premier League comment, focuses on this impressive start to the season by Hull, and in particular to Phelan.
