Transfer talk: Arsenal want Sterling, Man City line up move for Modric, Liverpool identify Gerrard replacement
A round-up of the biggest football transfer stories including the future of Raheem Sterling and Manchester City’s interest in Luka Modric.
Arsenal have joined the list of potential suitors for Raheem Sterling after the England winger put off contract talks with Liverpool until the summer, according to reports in the British media.
Sterling, the reigning Golden Boy winner, has sparked huge interest from clubs across Europe keen to acquire his services in the summer transfer window.
With Liverpool failing to sit the 20-year-old down for immediate contract talks, speculation is rife Sterling could leave the club in the summer.
The Daily Mirror has reported that Arsenal are monitoring Sterling’s availability and are keen to test Liverpool’s resolve at the end of the season.
Arsenal will face competition from the likes of Chelsea, Real Madrid and Manchester City, but with Sterling keen to remain in the Premier League, Arsene Wenger is reportedly confident that Arsenal can trump their rivals to sign the winger.
Turkish club Fenerbahce are set to make an offer for Manchester United striker Robin van Persie, British newspaper The Sun has reported.
Dutch striker Van Persie has one year remaining on his United deal and the Premier League club could be prepared to let him leave in the off-season.
Van Persie has struggled for form and fitness this season, and United manager Louis van Gaal may view the upcoming summer as a chance to sell the 31-year-old forward rather than risk him leaving on a free transfer.
Italian champions Juventus, who were among the bidders for Van Persie prior to his move to United in 2012, are also thought to be interested.
Manchester City are keen to sign Real Madrid midfielder Luka Modric in an attempt to shake up their midfield, reports in the British media have claimed.
Real Madrid are leading the chase for Juventus midfielder Paul Pogba, and should the Spanish club successfully lure the Frenchman to the Bernabeu, Modric could be made available.
If that were to prove the case, the Daily Star claim City are ready to pounce on Croatian playmaker Modric, who would cost in the region of £25 million (Dh136.2m).
Manager Brendan Rodgers has identified Derby County midfielder Will Hughes as a top transfer target, but any move will be put on hold until Derby’s status is secured.
According to British press reports, Rodgers believes Hughes is the ideal long-term successor to departing captain Steven Gerrard and is willing to meet Derby’s £15m valuation of the 19-year-old.
However, any hopes of a deal will be postponed until Derby’s destiny is decided. Steve McLaren’s team, fifth in the Championship, are still in the hunt for Premier League promotion, and should they secure top-flight status, a deal could be made more difficult.
However, if they fail in their bid for promotion, Liverpool are expected to make a move for Hughes.
