Sam Tomkins, the half-back, led England's 11-try spree with a record-equalling four touchdowns in a 60-6 thrashing of a patched-up and hopelessly outclassed France at Leigh Sports Village last night. The 21-year-old man of the match scored all his tries before half time, when England led 34-6, and the only surprise was that he failed to go on to break the record in the second half of the international.

In the Super League, a hat-trick from Lee Smith helped Leeds Rhinos to a 42-22 win over Harlequins at The Stoop. Meanwhile, Andrew Johns, the New South Wales assistant coach, has quit his position following his comments that sparked Timana Tahu to leave the Blues' State of Origin squad. Tahu left the camp just four days before a must-win clash against Queensland in Brisbane, telling coach Craig Bellamy on Friday he did not feel he could continue with the squad following Johns' comment, which was not aimed at him. Johns has stepped down from his role and also issued apologies to both Tahu and Greg Inglis, the Queensland Origin and Melbourne Storm star, for the comments he made on Wednesday night.

"Two nights ago while trying to talk up the match I made a disparaging comment about a member of the other team and in the process of that I referred to the colour of his skin," Johns said in a statement. "I should have thought more what I was saying about a player whom I have always admired and respected and I hope to speak with Greg soon to explain what happened. "I only hope that by stepping aside I can show others how seriously I am taking this issue and hopefully others may learn from it as well."

In the NRL, an inspired performance from Matt Bowen led the Cowboys to a 16-8 win over Canberra at Dairy Farmers Stadium yesterday. * Agencies
