Roger Federer defeated David Ferrer in the final of the Western & Southern Open in Cincinnati on Sunday.

The Swiss, who was ranked second seed in the tournament, saw off the Spaniard 6-3 1-6 6-2 in one hour and 42 minutes in what was the ninth all-top 10 final of the season.

The final, which was Federer’s fourth in a row, followed the form books as the 17-time Grand Slam champion continued his dominance over Ferrer, who he was now beaten in all 16 of their meetings in what was billed as “the battle of the 30-somethings”.

Earlier, Serena Williams saw off the challenge of Ana Ivanovic to claim her first Western & Southern Open title.

Williams came through 6-4 6-1 in a match time of one hour and two minutes.

“It’s just amazing to finally win here. The fans were amazing and it’s so wonderful to be here,” Williams told wtatennis.com.

“Congratulations to Ana - she’s such a great champion and such a wonderful, wonderful young lady. It’s so good to see wonderful women like her leading our tour right now.”

Ivanovic added: “It’s been a great week for me in Cincinnati. I really want to congratulate Serena. I think I got a lesson on how to serve today. Maybe after you retire you can give me some tips!”

The victory for Federer was his 80th singles title.

“It feels great,” Federer said in an on-court interview with ESPN’s Brad Gilbert. “I really enjoy playing here. I’ve played some really good tennis here over the years, so it’s really nice to come back and win it again.

“I thought the final was good. The whole tournament was really good for me. I’ve been beating Top 10 (players) along the way and just enjoying myself out on court, playing some positive tennis, so it’s really encouraging.”
