PARIS // French Davis Cup captain Yannick Noah has picked Gael Monfils to face Canada despite the player’s criticism of the decision to play the first-round tie overseas.
After his Australian Open quarterfinal loss to Canadian Milos Raonic, Monfils questioned the decision to play in the overseas region of Guadeloupe because of the logistics involved.
Noah will lead the team for the first time in the town of Baie-Mahault from March 4-6. The world group tie will be held on clay in the 8,000-seat Velodrome Amedee Detraux, which is the biggest stadium in Guadeloupe. It will be the first time France plays a Davis Cup tie in an overseas department.
Noah, the last Frenchman to win a Grand Slam, when he won the French Open back in 1983, told a news conference Wednesday that Monfils “is conscious he made a mistake” with his comments.
“I also think he is very motivated to play this first round,” Noah said.
In Melbourne, Monfils expressed doubts about the long trip to Guadeloupe with the season in full swing adding that a majority of French players were not in favor of traveling overseas. He however said he was ready to play if Noah chose him.
“Hopefully he understands that he has not done any good to the team with his comments,” Noah said. “But from the moment we will be together, rules will be defined. I already spoke with some (of the players), but my work will start next week.”
Noah also selected Jo-Wilfried Tsonga, Richard Gasquet, Gilles Simon and Edouard Roger-Vasselin in his team. He said some of them will arrive in Guadeloupe as soon as next Wednesday and will have more than a week to get ready for the tie.
After finishing runner-up to Martin Klizan at the Rotterdam open last weekend, Monfils withdrew from the Open 13 tournament in Marseille this week because of a hamstring problem he does not want to aggravate before the Davis Cup.
Tsonga has been playing on clay in South America in recent weeks and should not be hampered by the choice of surface. Gasquet won the Open Sud de France earlier this month while Gilles Simon has been struggling with consistency.
“We all agree that we had better results in the past,” Noah said. “But having 10 days to get ready is a real luxury. We will put things in place and I will openly speak about how I see things.”
Noah, who replaced Arnaud Clement following a disappointing 2015 campaign, is captaining the team for the third time after guiding France to Davis Cup titles in 1991 and 1996. He also led France to its maiden victory in the Fed Cup in 1997.

Many multinational groups will begin to feel the practical effect of the Domestic Minimum Top-Up Tax (DMTT), the UAE's implementation of the OECD’s global minimum tax under Pillar 2. While the rules apply for financial years starting on or after January 1, 2025, it is 2026 that marks the transition to an operational phase.

How the bonus system works
The two riders are among several riders in the UAE to receive the top payment of £10,000 under the Thank You Fund of £16 million (Dh80m), which was announced in conjunction with Deliveroo's £8 billion (Dh40bn) stock market listing earlier this year.
The £10,000 (Dh50,000) payment is made to those riders who have completed the highest number of orders in each market.
There are also riders who will receive payments of £1,000 (Dh5,000) and £500 (Dh2,500).
All riders who have worked with Deliveroo for at least one year and completed 2,000 orders will receive £200 (Dh1,000), the company said when it announced the scheme.

Dubai works towards better air quality by 2021
Dubai is on a mission to record good air quality for 90 per cent of the year – up from 86 per cent annually today – by 2021.
The municipality plans to have seven mobile air-monitoring stations by 2020 to capture more accurate data in hourly and daily trends of pollution.
These will be on the Palm Jumeirah, Al Qusais, Muhaisnah, Rashidiyah, Al Wasl, Al Quoz and Dubai Investment Park.
“It will allow real-time responding for emergency cases,” said Khaldoon Al Daraji, first environment safety officer at the municipality.
“We’re in a good position except for the cases that are out of our hands, such as sandstorms.
“Sandstorms are our main concern because the UAE is just a receiver.
“The hotspots are Iran, Saudi Arabia and southern Iraq, but we’re working hard with the region to reduce the cycle of sandstorm generation.”
Mr Al Daraji said monitoring as it stood covered 47 per cent of Dubai.
There are 12 fixed stations in the emirate, but Dubai also receives information from monitors belonging to other entities.
“There are 25 stations in total,” Mr Al Daraji said.
“We added new technology and equipment used for the first time for the detection of heavy metals.
“A hundred parameters can be detected but we want to expand it to make sure that the data captured can allow a baseline study in some areas to ensure they are well positioned.”
