PARIS // Third-seeded Victoria Azarenka reached the French Open quarter-finals for the third time yesterday with a 6-3, 6-0 win over the 2010 champion, Francesca Schiavone.
The double Australian Open champion will now face 12th-seeded Maria Kirilenko of Russia for a place in the semi-finals at Roland Garros.
The protagonists know each other well, not least as erstwhile doubles partners - they were runners-up at the 2011 Australian Open, while Azarenka saw off Kirilenko in the bronze-medal match at the London Olympic Games last summer.
Defending champion Maria Sharapova cantered into the quarter-finals with a 6-4, 6-3 win over American 17th seed Sloane Stephens.
Sharapova triumphed in 89 minutes and now faces either 18th -seeded Jelena Jankovic of Serbia or US hope Jamie Hampton.
The second-seeded Sharapova is yet to drop a set and handled Stephens's strong serve well, accumulating 12 break points and converting eight.
In her fourth-round match, Kirilenko, despite needing treatment for a sore shoulder, beat unseeded Bethanie Mattek-Sands of the United States 7-5, 6-4 to reach the last eight at Roland Garros for the first time after recovering from losing the opening three games.
Kirilenko, 26, who broke in the sixth and eighth games to make up for her slow start, and then overcame an opening service loss at the start of the second set, has now equalled her best grand-slam showing of runs to the quarter-finals at Wimbledon in 2012 and the Australian Open three years ago.
Schiavone, the world No 50, matched the 23-year-old Azarenka shot for shot and scream for scream in a first set which featured six breaks of serve.
But the pair's nine-year age difference was obvious in the second set, which Azarenka swept through in just 26 minutes, having reeled off nine straight games.
"I think it was the most composed and the most consistent match so far," Azarenka said.
"The beginning was back and forth. I feel like I didn't take all of the opportunities, but there was kind of a build-up to later on that I was doing the right thing."
The French Open is the only grand slam where Azarenka has failed to get beyond the quarter-finals.
She was beaten at the last-eight stage by Dinara Safina in 2009 and by Li Na, two years later.
Azarenka has a 3-2 winning record against close friend Kirilenko - who won the first two matches of their series, although her last triumph was back in 2007.
"Maria, I played her a lot of times," Azarenka said. "I think the last time we played was the Olympics.
"She's definitely improved a lot over the last couple years since she's a very motivated player [and a] good friend of mine."

Libya's Gold
UN Panel of Experts found regime secretly sold a fifth of the country's gold reserves.
The panel’s 2017 report followed a trail to West Africa where large sums of cash and gold were hidden by Abdullah Al Senussi, Qaddafi’s former intelligence chief, in 2011.
Cases filled with cash that was said to amount to $560m in 100 dollar notes, that was kept by a group of Libyans in Ouagadougou, Burkina Faso.
A second stash was said to have been held in Accra, Ghana, inside boxes at the local offices of an international human rights organisation based in France.
Ten tax points to be aware of in 2026
1. Domestic VAT refund amendments: request your refund within five years
If a business does not apply for the refund on time, they lose their credit.
2. E-invoicing in the UAE
Businesses should continue preparing for the implementation of e-invoicing in the UAE, with 2026 a preparation and transition period ahead of phased mandatory adoption.
3. More tax audits
Tax authorities are increasingly using data already available across multiple filings to identify audit risks.
4. More beneficial VAT and excise tax penalty regime
Tax disputes are expected to become more frequent and more structured, with clearer administrative objection and appeal processes. The UAE has adopted a new penalty regime for VAT and excise disputes, which now mirrors the penalty regime for corporate tax.
5. Greater emphasis on statutory audit
There is a greater need for the accuracy of financial statements. The International Financial Reporting Standards standards need to be strictly adhered to and, as a result, the quality of the audits will need to increase.
6. Further transfer pricing enforcement
Transfer pricing enforcement, which refers to the practice of establishing prices for internal transactions between related entities, is expected to broaden in scope. The UAE will shortly open the possibility to negotiate advance pricing agreements, or essentially rulings for transfer pricing purposes.
7. Limited time periods for audits
Recent amendments also introduce a default five-year limitation period for tax audits and assessments, subject to specific statutory exceptions. While the standard audit and assessment period is five years, this may be extended to up to 15 years in cases involving fraud or tax evasion.
8. Pillar 2 implementation
Many multinational groups will begin to feel the practical effect of the Domestic Minimum Top-Up Tax (DMTT), the UAE's implementation of the OECD’s global minimum tax under Pillar 2. While the rules apply for financial years starting on or after January 1, 2025, it is 2026 that marks the transition to an operational phase.
9. Reduced compliance obligations for imported goods and services
Businesses that apply the reverse-charge mechanism for VAT purposes in the UAE may benefit from reduced compliance obligations.
10. Substance and CbC reporting focus
Tax authorities are expected to continue strengthening the enforcement of economic substance and Country-by-Country (CbC) reporting frameworks. In the UAE, these regimes are increasingly being used as risk-assessment tools, providing tax authorities with a comprehensive view of multinational groups’ global footprints and enabling them to assess whether profits are aligned with real economic activity.

Retail gloom
Online grocer Ocado revealed retail sales fell 5.7 per cen in its first quarter as customers switched back to pre-pandemic shopping patterns.
It was a tough comparison from a year earlier, when the UK was in lockdown, but on a two-year basis its retail division, a joint venture with Marks&Spencer, rose 31.7 per cent over the quarter.
The group added that a 15 per cent drop in customer basket size offset an 11.6. per cent rise in the number of customer transactions.
