DUBAI // Satish Seemar will saddle only his second Dubai World Cup runner on Saturday after Surfer was added to the field for the world's most valuable horse race at Monday's declaration.

Surfer will line up alongside 15 others at Meydan Racecourse, including Cat O’Mountain, who was also added to replace his Godolphin stablemate Hunter’s Light, who now runs in the Dubai Duty Free.

Surfer and Cat O’Mountain were third and fourth respectively behind Prince Bishop in the Al Maktoum Challenge Round 3 on Super Saturday two weeks ago.

Surfer will be ridden by regular partner Richard Mullen, while Mickael Barzalona will ride Cat O’Mountain.

Godolphin will also run African Story with Silvestre de Sousa on board and Prince Bishop, who again will have Kieren Fallon in the saddle.

Seemar’s only other runner in the World Cup was Richard’s Kid, who finished 12 of 14 in 2011 and the Zabeel Stables trainer hopes for much better from the horse widely known as the best maiden in training until he broke his duck in December.

“I spoke with the team at Zabeel, with Richie, and with the owner Sheikh Rashid bin Mohammed, and they all said the decision lies with you, so I made the rational choice,” Seemar said about deciding to pitch his charge into the biggest test of all.

“He is the right horse for the right race, and he has been there or thereabouts in the past four Maktoum Challenges.

“He is a very talented horse, but has been unlucky with draws. He will run an incredible race.”

Seemar will also send out on Saturday Reynaldothewizard to defend his crown in the Dubai Golden Shaheen, Gold City in the Godolphin Mile and Ralston Road in the Dubai Gold Cup.

He oversaw all four in work yesterday morning and was bullish about the chances of his quartet. “Reynaldothewizard is my best chance of the night and I expect him to win,” Seemar said.

Notable salonnières of the Middle East through history

Al Khasan (Okaz, Saudi Arabia)

Tamadir bint Amr Al Harith, known simply as Al Khasan, was a poet from Najd famed for elegies, earning great renown for the eulogy of her brothers Mu’awiyah and Sakhr, both killed in tribal wars. Although not a salonnière, this prestigious 7th century poet fostered a culture of literary criticism and could be found standing in the souq of Okaz and reciting her poetry, publicly pronouncing her views and inviting others to join in the debate on scholarship. She later converted to Islam.

Maryana Marrash (Aleppo)

A poet and writer, Marrash helped revive the tradition of the salon and was an active part of the Nadha movement, or Arab Renaissance. Born to an established family in Aleppo in Ottoman Syria in 1848, Marrash was educated at missionary schools in Aleppo and Beirut at a time when many women did not receive an education. After touring Europe, she began to host salons where writers played chess and cards, competed in the art of poetry, and discussed literature and politics. An accomplished singer and canon player, music and dancing were a part of these evenings.

Princess Nazil Fadil (Cairo)

Princess Nazil Fadil gathered religious, literary and political elite together at her Cairo palace, although she stopped short of inviting women. The princess, a niece of Khedive Ismail, believed that Egypt’s situation could only be solved through education and she donated her own property to help fund the first modern Egyptian University in Cairo.

Mayy Ziyadah (Cairo)

Ziyadah was the first to entertain both men and women at her Cairo salon, founded in 1913. The writer, poet, public speaker and critic, her writing explored language, religious identity, language, nationalism and hierarchy. Born in Nazareth, Palestine, to a Lebanese father and Palestinian mother, her salon was open to different social classes and earned comparisons with souq of where Al Khansa herself once recited.
