ABU DHABI // Sheikha Latifa bint Ahmed, a multiple medal winner in showjumping for the UAE, has ruled herself out from qualifying for the 2018 FEI World Equestrian Games.
She cited injury to her 13-year-old mare Peanuts de Beaufer as the reason for withdrawing from the CSI 4-Star Grand Prix event of the inaugural Al Shira’aa International Horse Show that got underway on Wednesday. The event will conclude with the Dh1 million grand finale FEI CSI 4-Star showjumping event on Saturday at the Al Forsan International Sports Resort.
The competition in the elite division has drawn 142 local and international riders locally hoping to earn qualifications to next year’s World Equestrian Games in Tryon, North Carolina.
“For the moment, I don’t have the horse to jump the big classes until my mare that won the 5-Star Grand Prix in Ghantoot in 2015 gets better,” Sheikha Latifa said. “I have a lot of young horses and as of now the objective is to bring them up to the required levels.”
Sheikh Latifa, winner of a silver medal at the 2010 Asian Games and a Team bronze in 2006, will put to test her two seven-year-old horses over the four days of competition in Abu Dhabi.
Commenting on the Al Shira’aa Horse Show, she said: “It is a fantastic event because you have very good facilities here. To have a show like this for everybody from children to seniors is great.”
Sheikha Latifa backed Emirati riders to achieve success in the sport in the coming years, saying: “I think we have a lot of talented riders to shape up our future.
“We have quite a lot of them taking part in the international circuit but I think the national level needs to go up another level to match what we have at the international level.”
Two riders with the ability to qualify for the WEG from Saturday’s Grand Prix Sheikh Majid Al Qassimi and Abdullah Al Marri, according to the Dubai Royal.
“They both have horses that can reach that level,” she said. “You need to strike a good combination to be successful. Good horses with good management with a good team. Unless you have all of that it won’t work.”
Meanwhile, Clement Boulanger of France on Lenna Z bagged the CSI 4-Star One Round against the clock on the opening day of the competition.
Emirati Mohammed Hasan Al Masawi on Detroit WV was second and Tina Lund of Denmark on Calvara took third.
Another CSI 4-Star One Round against the clock was won by Emirati Moftah Al Dhaheri on Al Yamamah.
Ahmed Saber Hamcho of Syria on-board Chesterfield finished second ahead of Colombian Andres Penalosa on Tenor De Rouhet.

China and the UAE agree comprehensive strategic partnership
China and the UAE forged even closer links between the two countries during the landmark state visit after finalising a ten-point agreement on a range of issues, from international affairs to the economy and trade and renewable energy.

Iraq negotiating over Iran sanctions impact
- US sanctions on Iran’s energy industry and exports took effect on Monday, November 5.
- Washington issued formal waivers to eight buyers of Iranian oil, allowing them to continue limited imports. Iraq did not receive a waiver.
- Iraq’s government is cooperating with the US to contain Iranian influence in the country, and increased Iraqi oil production is helping to make up for Iranian crude that sanctions are blocking from markets, US officials say.
- Iraq, the second-biggest producer in the Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries, pumped last month at a record 4.78 million barrels a day, former Oil Minister Jabbar Al-Luaibi said on Oct. 20. Iraq exported 3.83 million barrels a day last month, according to tanker tracking and data from port agents.
- Iraq has been working to restore production at its northern Kirkuk oil field. Kirkuk could add 200,000 barrels a day of oil to Iraq’s total output, Hook said.
- The country stopped trucking Kirkuk oil to Iran about three weeks ago, in line with U.S. sanctions, according to four people with knowledge of the matter who asked not to be identified because they aren’t allowed to speak to media.
- Oil exports from Iran, OPEC’s third-largest supplier, have slumped since President Donald Trump announced in May that he’d reimpose sanctions. Iran shipped about 1.76 million barrels a day in October out of 3.42 million in total production, data compiled by Bloomberg show.
- Benchmark Brent crude fell 47 cents to $72.70 a barrel in London trading at 7:26 a.m. local time. U.S. West Texas Intermediate was 25 cents lower at $62.85 a barrel in New York. WTI held near the lowest level in seven months as concerns of a tightening market eased after the U.S. granted its waivers to buyers of Iranian crude.

One of Basquiat’s paintings, the vibrant Cabra (1981–82), now hangs in Louvre Abu Dhabi temporarily, on loan from the Guggenheim Abu Dhabi.
The latter museum is not open physically, but has assembled a collection and puts together a series of events called Talking Art, such as this discussion, moderated by writer Chaedria LaBouvier.
It's something of a Basquiat season in Abu Dhabi at the moment. Last week, The Radiant Child, a documentary on Basquiat was shown at Manarat Al Saadiyat, and tonight (April 18) the Guggenheim Abu Dhabi is throwing the re-creation of a party tonight, of the legendary Canal Zone party thrown in 1979, which epitomised the collaborative scene of the time. It was at Canal Zone that Basquiat met prominent members of the art world and moved from unknown graffiti artist into someone in the spotlight.
“We’ve invited local resident arists, we’ll have spray cans at the ready,” says curator Maisa Al Qassemi of the Guggenheim Abu Dhabi.

Real estate tokenisation project
Dubai launched the pilot phase of its real estate tokenisation project last month.
The initiative focuses on converting real estate assets into digital tokens recorded on blockchain technology and helps in streamlining the process of buying, selling and investing, the Dubai Land Department said.
Dubai’s real estate tokenisation market is projected to reach Dh60 billion ($16.33 billion) by 2033, representing 7 per cent of the emirate’s total property transactions, according to the DLD.
