Prince Ali? Luis Figo? Five possible rivals to Michel Platini in Fifa presidency race

  • English
  • Arabic

Following the announcement that Michel Platini will run for the Fifa presidency, we look at five other possible condadiates.

Prince Ali bin Al Hussein

Age: 39

Country: Jordan

Position: President of the Jordanian Football Association

The Jordanian royal lost out to Sepp Blatter in the May 29 Fifa election by 133 votes to 73. A former Fifa vice president, he failed to get the backing of his own Asian Football Confederation when he ran against the 79-year-old Swiss and opposes Platini’s nomination.

Chung Mong-joon

Age: 63

Country: South Korea

Position: Businessman and politician

Chung, the controlling shareholder of Hyundai Heavy Industries and another former Fifa vice president, was a fierce critic of Blatter during his time with Fifa, and he told a news conference in Seoul last month he would meet with European delegates before making his decision to run.

Musa Bility

Age: 48

Country: Liberia

Position: Liberian FA chairman

Bility, 48, announced last month he plans to stand for the Fifa presidency on February 26, saying it was his continent’s turn to lead world football. “Africa is the largest voting bloc in Fifa and we must take the lead to bring football together,” said Bility, who will become only the second African to bid for Fifa’s top job.

Zico

Age: 62

Country: Brazil

Position: Coach of FC Goa and star of the Brazil 1982 World Cup team

The Brazilian legend said Tuesday he has asked the Brazilian Football Federation to put forward his candidacy to replace Blatter. Zico has no previous administration experience but has said he will seek the five nominations required to be a candidate.

Luis Figo

Age: 42

Country: Portugal

Position: Retired player

The former Barcelona, Real Madrid and Portugal winger dropped out of the Fifa presidential election on May 21, calling football’s governing body a dictatorship under Blatter. Figo said during campaigning that he encountered hypocrisy among federation presidents and has yet to declare whether he will stand again.
