Roberto Martinez, the Wigan manager, urged young striker Franco Di Santo to keep his feet on the ground after his double strike saw off QPR. Di Santo struck with a superb finish five minutes before the break and made it 2-0 on 66 minutes. "Franco came here at a very young age and has had a few experiences but he works hard and understand the game and today is his reward," said Martinez. "He has a long way to go but he has got absolutely everything."

Mikel Arteta, the Everton midfielder, scored a controversial injury-time penalty as Blackburn were made to pay for missing two second-half spot-kicks of their own at Ewood Park. Junior Hoilett saw his penalty saved by Tim Howard a minute after half-time, before Mauro Formica fired Rovers' second spot-kick against the post. Arteta then delivered the killer blow in injury time, after Christopher Samba was judged to have climbed on the back of Marouane Fellaini.

Swansea's inability to take their chances leaves them still awaiting their first Premier League goal and win after drawing with Sunderland at the Liberty Stadium. Record signing Danny Graham headed their best chance wide when unmarked inside the box, while the striker forced two fine saves from Simon Mignolet and Scott Sinclair stuck the bar. Sunderland, also without a win, threatened through Asamoah Gyan early on but he fluffed their best chance, while John O'Shea hit the bar.
