The first Grand Slam tennis tournament of the year saw a familiar – and not so familiar – face winning the singles titles in Melbourne.

Novak Djokovic became Australian Open champion for a record-extending eighth time thanks to a marathon 6-4, 4-6, 2-6, 6-3, 6-4 win over Dominic Thiem.

In the women's final, Sofia Kenin defeated Garbine Muguruza 4-6, 6-2, 6-2 to earn her first grand slam victory and silence those who doubted she could make it to the very top of the sport.

In American football, Kansas City Chiefs quarter-back Patrick Mahomes inspired his team to a thrilling 31-20 win over the San Francisco 49ers at Super Bowl LIV in Miami.

After their 5-0 thrashing of New Zealand in the recent Twenty20 series, India were brought back down to earth in the opening one-day international against the Black Caps.

In a high scoring battle in Hamilton, Ross Taylor hit an unbeaten 109 to help the home side chase down India's 347-4 and win the game by four wickets.
