ABU DHABI // Few would want to have their office in the back of a 17-metre transport trailer. But for the crews of two top-fuel dragster teams going head-to-head this weekend at Yas Marina Circuit in 300-metre, nitromethane-fuelled bursts, that is exactly where they spend their days preparing for races. Part transporter, part hardware store, part computer lab, the 36,000kg trailers will be stationed at the circuit permanently, providing support for 8,000-horsepower dragsters. "Ninety per cent of equipment we use to run this car is in this trailer," said Don Schumacher, the president of Don Schumacher Racing, which provided the two dragsters for this evening's exhibition event at the Yas Marina Drag Racing Centre. Yesterday, the trailers were parked near the centre, and crews were busy making final adjustments to the cars ahead of this weekend's International Drag Racing Festival.
The dragsters made their first runs on the new track at about 5pm yesterday. Mr Schumacher believes the transporters will be making some road trips in the region soon as the popularity of drag racing spreads. He said that with strips in Qatar, Bahrain, Saudi Arabia and Kuwait, he could see a regional competition starting soon. "Once we introduce these two cars here, I think there think there will be enough excitement created that hopefully it will turn into a circuit that is run here in the Middle East," he said.
Doors open for the racing at 4pm. Tickets can be purchased or collected from a ticket office adjacent to the drag strip at Yas Marina Circuit. For more information on the event, visit www.yasmarinacircuit.com.
