ABU DHABI // Dubai's Khalifa Al Mutaiwei, the former world champion, overcame mechanical trouble on the fifth and final day of the 2012 Abu Dhabi Desert Challenge on Friday to finish second overall.
Mutaiwei, who won the FIA World Cup in 2004 and was out of the sport for seven years, shared the driving responsibilities with the German Andreas Schulz.
Jean-Louis Schlesser of France won the Abu Dhabi event for a record sixth time.
Mutaiwei's X-raid Mini All4 Racing crew were delayed while replacing a viscous fan on the vehicle's engine in the morning, and he had to stop several times thereafter.
"This is probably the most demanding rally with sand dunes in the world," said Al Mutaiwei, who was sixth in the 287.32-kilometre final stage. "I am quite happy to finish second and to see that I still have the speed to match the rest after the seven-year absence. I must not forget that this is still a learning year for me and to finish second is still a pleasing achievement.
"Now I can look ahead to the new event in Qatar later this month and continue the progress I have shown on the Desert Challenge and since the Baja in Italy last month."
Schlesser and his Russian teammate Konstantin Zhilstov expanded their early lead over Al Mutaiwei in the 2012 World Cup for Cross-Country Rallies.
The Frenchman Patrick Sireyjol finished the final stage in fourth with his SMG Buggy and that was sufficient to seal third place.
The UAE's Yayha Al Helai completed the rally, held across treacherous soft sand and in punishing temperatures, in fourth overall with his Nissan Patrol.
The next round of both the FIA and FIM World Cups will be the inaugural five-day Sealine Cross-Country Rally, organised by the Qatar Motor and Motorcycle Federation, on April 15-21.
Obaid Al Kitbe, the Emirati quad biker, ensured a home victory by clinching his second victory in the Middle East's No 1 rally.

Pharaoh's curse
British aristocrat Lord Carnarvon, who funded the expedition to find the Tutankhamun tomb, died in a Cairo hotel four months after the crypt was opened.
He had been in poor health for many years after a car crash, and a mosquito bite made worse by a shaving cut led to blood poisoning and pneumonia.
Reports at the time said Lord Carnarvon suffered from “pain as the inflammation affected the nasal passages and eyes”.
Decades later, scientists contended he had died of aspergillosis after inhaling spores of the fungus aspergillus in the tomb, which can lie dormant for months. The fact several others who entered were also found dead withiin a short time led to the myth of the curse.

Building boom turning to bust as Turkey's economy slows
Deep in a provincial region of northwestern Turkey, it looks like a mirage - hundreds of luxury houses built in neat rows, their pointed towers somewhere between French chateau and Disney castle.
Meant to provide luxurious accommodations for foreign buyers, the houses are however standing empty in what is anything but a fairytale for their investors.
The ambitious development has been hit by regional turmoil as well as the slump in the Turkish construction industry - a key sector - as the country's economy heads towards what could be a hard landing in an intensifying downturn.
After a long period of solid growth, Turkey's economy contracted 1.1 per cent in the third quarter, and many economists expect it will enter into recession this year.
The country has been hit by high inflation and a currency crisis in August. The lira lost 28 per cent of its value against the dollar in 2018 and markets are still unconvinced by the readiness of the government under President Recep Tayyip Erdogan to tackle underlying economic issues.
The villas close to the town centre of Mudurnu in the Bolu region are intended to resemble European architecture and are part of the Sarot Group's Burj Al Babas project.
But the development of 732 villas and a shopping centre - which began in 2014 - is now in limbo as Sarot Group has sought bankruptcy protection.
It is one of hundreds of Turkish companies that have done so as they seek cover from creditors and to restructure their debts.

How will Gen Alpha invest?
Mark Chahwan, co-founder and chief executive of robo-advisory firm Sarwa, forecasts that Generation Alpha (born between 2010 and 2024) will start investing in their teenage years and therefore benefit from compound interest.
“Technology and education should be the main drivers to make this happen, whether it’s investing in a few clicks or their schools/parents stepping up their personal finance education skills,” he adds.
Mr Chahwan says younger generations have a higher capacity to take on risk, but for some their appetite can be more cautious because they are investing for the first time. “Schools still do not teach personal finance and stock market investing, so a lot of the learning journey can feel daunting and intimidating,” he says.
He advises millennials to not always start with an aggressive portfolio even if they can afford to take risks. “We always advise to work your way up to your risk capacity, that way you experience volatility and get used to it. Given the higher risk capacity for the younger generations, stocks are a favourite,” says Mr Chahwan.
Highlighting the role technology has played in encouraging millennials and Gen Z to invest, he says: “They were often excluded, but with lower account minimums ... a customer with $1,000 [Dh3,672] in their account has their money working for them just as hard as the portfolio of a high get-worth individual.”
