More than 500 Emirati women will take to the mat in a jiu-jitsu competition exclusively for women organised by the UAE Jiu-Jitsu Federation to mark the International Women’s Day.

Featuring Emirati women from across the country, the day-long event will be worked off on Friday at the Zayed Sports City’s Ipic Arena.

Abdulmunam Al Hashmi, president of the Asian Jiu-Jitsu Union and chairman of the UAEJJF, said they were inspired by the work done under the leadership of Her Highness Sheikha Fatima bint Mubarak, Chairwoman of the General Women Union and Supreme Chairperson of the Family Development Foundation.

“This championship exclusively for Emirati women has been launched in line with our overall aim to build jiu-jitsu as a sport in the UAE — not just with males, but with females as well.

“We’ve seen the tremendous amount of female talent in various tournaments, most recently the Sharjah International Pro Jiu-Jitsu Championship last month, and want this to be another platform for them to succeed.”

On Saturday, the Emirati men will take the platform in the third and final leg of the President’s Cup at the same venue.
