Aaron Judge breaks Babe Ruth's home run record for New York Yankees

Aaron Judge made history on Saturday, blasting his 33rd home run of the year at Yankee Stadium to break Babe Ruth's 96-year-old record as New York defeated the Toronto Blue Jays 2-1.

The power hitting rookie's 52nd overall homer of the season comes five days after he broke Mark McGwire's Major League Baseball rookie home run record.

Judge's 33 homers is the most by a Yankee at home in a single season. Ruth set the previous home record in 1921 when the Yankees played across the Harlem River at Manhattan's Polo Grounds in the team's first pennant-winning season.

More baseball

"Pretty incredible accomplishment but I don't got much to say about it," the 25-year-old Judge said. "I'm just focused on trying to win and help the team out right now."

He also tied Mickey Mantle for the eighth most home runs hit by a Yankee in a single season.

CC Sabathia pitched effectively into the sixth, but the Yankees were eliminated from the AL East playoff race shortly after getting the win over the Blue Jays when Boston defeated Houston 6-3.

"We took care of our business, that's all we can do," Sabathia said.

The Yankees (91-70) needed wins and for the Red Sox to lose their remaining two games to have a shot at the division title.

The consolation for the Yankees is they will host the wild-card game Tuesday against the Minnesota Twins.
