NHL: Los Angeles Kings back on track after shootout win over Cannucks

Jeff Carter scored Los Angeles' first power-play goal of the season and added the only score in the shoot-out, leading the Kings to a 3-2 comeback victory over the Vancouver Canucks.

Slava Voynov had tied the scores with 43.2 seconds left in regulation time for the defending Stanley Cup champions, who have won two straight after an 0-2-1 start. Jonathan Quick stopped 21 shots for the Kings, including all three Vancouver attempts in the shoot-out.

Roberto Luongo made 26 saves for Vancouver, which went 1-1-1 on a three-game California road trip. Zack Kassian scored his fourth goal of the season, and Alex Burrows also scored in a rematch of the clubs' stunning playoff series last spring.

Luongo was sharp in his second start since losing his job to Cory Schneider, and Los Angeles struggled offensively through 59 frustrating minutes until pulling Quick for an extra attacker. Voynov teed up a shot from the point that found a hole in heavy traffic, wobbling past Luongo for the Russian defenseman's first goal of the season.

After a scoreless overtime, Quick easily stopped Burrows, Alexander Edler and Kassian, while Carter beat Luongo in the third shoot-out round.

Zdeno Chara had a goal and two assists as the Boston Bruins pulled away in the last two minutes to beat the Carolina Hurricanes 5-3.

David Krejci scored the go-ahead goal with 1:50 remaining, before Tyler Seguin added an empty-net effort with eight seconds to play.

Brad Marchand and Nathan Horton also scored for the North-east Division leaders, who remained unbeaten in regulation.

It was the Stanley Cup champions' second straight win after opening with three defeats.

Keith Yandle had a goal and an assist and Chad Johnson registered his first NHL shutout as the Phoenix Coyotes eased past the Nashville Predators 4-0.

Antoine Vermette, Laurie Korpikoski and Nick Johnson also scored for the Predators.

Elsewhere, the Edmonton Oilers beat the Colorado Avalanche 4-1 and the Columbus Blue Jackets were 2-1 winners over the Dallas Stars.

Another way to earn air miles

In addition to the Emirates and Etihad programmes, there is the Air Miles Middle East card, which offers members the ability to choose any airline, has no black-out dates and no restrictions on seat availability. Air Miles is linked up to HSBC credit cards and can also be earned through retail partners such as Spinneys, Sharaf DG and The Toy Store.

An Emirates Dubai-London round-trip ticket costs 180,000 miles on the Air Miles website. But customers earn these ‘miles’ at a much faster rate than airline miles. Adidas offers two air miles per Dh1 spent. Air Miles has partnerships with websites as well, so booking.com and agoda.com offer three miles per Dh1 spent.

“If you use your HSBC credit card when shopping at our partners, you are able to earn Air Miles twice which will mean you can get that flight reward faster and for less spend,” says Paul Lacey, the managing director for Europe, Middle East and India for Aimia, which owns and operates Air Miles Middle East.

What the law says

Micro-retirement is not a recognised concept or employment status under Federal Decree Law No. 33 of 2021 on the Regulation of Labour Relations (as amended) (UAE Labour Law). As such, it reflects a voluntary work-life balance practice, rather than a recognised legal employment category, according to Dilini Loku, senior associate for law firm Gateley Middle East.

“Some companies may offer formal sabbatical policies or career break programmes; however, beyond such arrangements, there is no automatic right or statutory entitlement to extended breaks,” she explains.

“Any leave taken beyond statutory entitlements, such as annual leave, is typically regarded as unpaid leave in accordance with Article 33 of the UAE Labour Law. While employees may legally take unpaid leave, such requests are subject to the employer’s discretion and require approval.”

If an employee resigns to pursue micro-retirement, the employment contract is terminated, and the employer is under no legal obligation to rehire the employee in the future unless specific contractual agreements are in place (such as return-to-work arrangements), which are generally uncommon, Ms Loku adds.
