AL AIN // Mark Allen, the manager of the Manchester City academy, says football in the UAE is moving in the right direction with steady progress being made on the tactical side of the game.
Allen has brought an Under 17 team to take part in the Al Ain International Football Juniors Championship and yesterday his City side cruised to their third straight win of the tournament, defeating the hosts 2-1.
Gregory Leigh's 26th minute header settled the game in City's favour after Yousuf Ahmed's goal nine minutes earlier had cancelled out Jordy Mayifuila's ninth-minute opener for the English team, but Al Ain had their chances of levelling the scores, even after they were reduced to 10 men in the 76th minute when Saeed Ali, their captain, was sent off when he picked up his second yellow card of the game.
Allen was impressed with the performance Al Ain gave his team and he said: "The tactical level of the game here is getting better and better all the time.
"The understanding of the game - tactically, where to play, when to push - a big improvement.
"So I think it is definitely going in the right direction.
"We knew it was going to be a very tough game. We know Al Ain play very good football and they tried to play the game in the right way.
"We knew we were in for a battle, so it was important for us to start quickly and get into our game."
The defeat has ended Al Ain's hopes of retaining the trophy, but Abdulreza Barzegari saluted his players, who did not get much time to prepare for the tournament as they have been busy with their school exams in recent weeks.
Barzegari said most of his players had missed around seven of the 15 training sessions that had been scheduled over the last month as their parents would not give them permission to take time out.
"I thank all my players, not just for this game but all three matches," Barzegari said. "This was one of the best matches we have played during this championship.
"The circumstances coming into the championship were a bit difficult because of the school exams, but I think we played really well, especially against one of the best football academies in England."

Yemen's Bahais and the charges they often face
The Baha'i faith was made known in Yemen in the 19th century, first introduced by an Iranian man named Ali Muhammad Al Shirazi, considered the Herald of the Baha'i faith in 1844.
The Baha'i faith has had a growing number of followers in recent years despite persecution in Yemen and Iran.
Today, some 2,000 Baha'is reside in Yemen, according to Insaf.
"The 24 defendants represented by the House of Justice, which has intelligence outfits from the uS and the UK working to carry out an espionage scheme in Yemen under the guise of religion.. aimed to impant and found the Bahai sect on Yemeni soil by bringing foreign Bahais from abroad and homing them in Yemen," the charge sheet said.
Baha'Ullah, the founder of the Bahai faith, was exiled by the Ottoman Empire in 1868 from Iran to what is now Israel. Now, the Bahai faith's highest governing body, known as the Universal House of Justice, is based in the Israeli city of Haifa, which the Bahais turn towards during prayer.
The Houthis cite this as collective "evidence" of Bahai "links" to Israel - which the Houthis consider their enemy.

How to invest in gold
Investors can tap into the gold price by purchasing physical jewellery, coins and even gold bars, but these need to be stored safely and possibly insured.
A cheaper and more straightforward way to benefit from gold price growth is to buy an exchange-traded fund (ETF).
Most advisers suggest sticking to “physical” ETFs. These hold actual gold bullion, bars and coins in a vault on investors’ behalf. Others do not hold gold but use derivatives to track the price instead, adding an extra layer of risk. The two biggest physical gold ETFs are SPDR Gold Trust and iShares Gold Trust.
Another way to invest in gold’s success is to buy gold mining stocks, but Mr Gravier says this brings added risks and can be more volatile. “They have a serious downside potential should the price consolidate.”
Mr Kyprianou says gold and gold miners are two different asset classes. “One is a commodity and the other is a company stock, which means they behave differently.”
Mining companies are a business, susceptible to other market forces, such as worker availability, health and safety, strikes, debt levels, and so on. “These have nothing to do with gold at all. It means that some companies will survive, others won’t.”
By contrast, when gold is mined, it just sits in a vault. “It doesn’t even rust, which means it retains its value,” Mr Kyprianou says.
You may already have exposure to gold miners in your portfolio, say, through an international ETF or actively managed mutual fund.
You could spread this risk with an actively managed fund that invests in a spread of gold miners, with the best known being BlackRock Gold & General. It is up an incredible 55 per cent over the past year, and 240 per cent over five years. As always, past performance is no guide to the future.

Real estate tokenisation project
Dubai launched the pilot phase of its real estate tokenisation project last month.
The initiative focuses on converting real estate assets into digital tokens recorded on blockchain technology and helps in streamlining the process of buying, selling and investing, the Dubai Land Department said.
Dubai’s real estate tokenisation market is projected to reach Dh60 billion ($16.33 billion) by 2033, representing 7 per cent of the emirate’s total property transactions, according to the DLD.

The flights
Etihad and Emirates fly direct to Kolkata from Dh1,504 and Dh1,450 return including taxes, respectively. The flight takes four hours 30 minutes outbound and 5 hours 30 minute returning.
The trains
Numerous trains link Kolkata and Murshidabad but the daily early morning Hazarduari Express (3’ 52”) is the fastest and most convenient; this service also stops in Plassey. The return train departs Murshidabad late afternoon. Though just about feasible as a day trip, staying overnight is recommended.
The hotels
Mursidabad’s hotels are less than modest but Berhampore, 11km south, offers more accommodation and facilities (and the Hazarduari Express also pauses here). Try Hotel The Fame, with an array of rooms from doubles at Rs1,596/Dh90 to a ‘grand presidential suite’ at Rs7,854/Dh443.
