Coach Marcello Lippi heralded his Guangzhou Evergrande side’s comprehensive 5-1 victory over Cerezo Osaka in their Asian Champions League last-16 first leg at Nagai Stadium yesterday that all but booked their place in the quarter-finals.
Two goals from Guangzhou’s Brazilian duo Elkeson and Muriqui and a goal from China international forward Gao Lin overwhelmed the J-League side, who only have an effort from Aria Jasuru Hasegawa to take with them to China next week in what will be a mammoth task at Tianhe Stadium.
Under Lippi, the defending champion’s record against J-League sides is nine out of 10 in the continental competition, but there have been few performances as one-sided as the encounter in Osaka.
“This is a delightful win for us, even though we were not expecting to win by such a large margin,” the Italian said.
“We had watched their games on video and I don’t think they changed much. The only difference was that we played much better than I had expected, not their performance.”
Three-time Asian champions Pohang Steelers recorded a 2-1 come-from-behind win over fellow South Korean side Jeonbuk Hyundai Motors.
A goalless first period was followed by a much improved second half as home side Jeonbuk took the lead through Lee Jae-sung on 53 minutes.
But, as they had done in the K-League Classic meeting between the sides in March, Pohang snatched victory from the jaws of defeat with goals on 58 minutes from Son Jun-ho and Go Moo-yul on 73 minutes at Jeonju World Cup Stadium.
The current K-League Classic champions host Jeonbuk in next week’s second leg at The Steelyard with a goal advantage and the additional bonus of two priceless away goals.
At Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, Muhtar Fallatah’s goal in the 75th minute lifted Al Ittihad to a 1-0 win over Al Shabab.

What is hepatitis?
Hepatitis is an inflammation of the liver, which can lead to fibrosis (scarring), cirrhosis or liver cancer.
There are 5 main hepatitis viruses, referred to as types A, B, C, D and E.
Hepatitis C is mostly transmitted through exposure to infective blood. This can occur through blood transfusions, contaminated injections during medical procedures, and through injecting drugs. Sexual transmission is also possible, but is much less common.
People infected with hepatitis C experience few or no symptoms, meaning they can live with the virus for years without being diagnosed. This delay in treatment can increase the risk of significant liver damage.
There are an estimated 170 million carriers of Hepatitis C around the world.
The virus causes approximately 399,000 fatalities each year worldwide, according to WHO.

Who are the Sacklers?
The Sackler family is a transatlantic dynasty that owns Purdue Pharma, which manufactures and markets OxyContin, one of the drugs at the centre of America's opioids crisis. The family is well known for their generous philanthropy towards the world's top cultural institutions, including Guggenheim Museum, the National Portrait Gallery, Tate in Britain, Yale University and the Serpentine Gallery, to name a few. Two branches of the family control Purdue Pharma.
Isaac Sackler and Sophie Greenberg were Jewish immigrants who arrived in New York before the First World War. They had three sons. The first, Arthur, died before OxyContin was invented. The second, Mortimer, who died aged 93 in 2010, was a former chief executive of Purdue Pharma. The third, Raymond, died aged 97 in 2017 and was also a former chief executive of Purdue Pharma.
It was Arthur, a psychiatrist and pharmaceutical marketeer, who started the family business dynasty. He and his brothers bought a small company called Purdue Frederick; among their first products were laxatives and prescription earwax remover.
Arthur's branch of the family has not been involved in Purdue for many years and his daughter, Elizabeth, has spoken out against it, saying the company's role in America's drugs crisis is "morally abhorrent".
The lawsuits that were brought by the attorneys general of New York and Massachussetts named eight Sacklers. This includes Kathe, Mortimer, Richard, Jonathan and Ilene Sackler Lefcourt, who are all the children of either Mortimer or Raymond. Then there's Theresa Sackler, who is Mortimer senior's widow; Beverly, Raymond's widow; and David Sackler, Raymond's grandson.
Members of the Sackler family are rarely seen in public.
