Leicester are on the verge of promotion to the Premier League after the Championship leaders beat Sheffield Wednesday 2-1 on Friday.

Nigel Pearson’s side moved 19 points clear of third placed QPR thanks to Anthony Knockaert’s second half winner at the King Power Stadium.

That means the big-spending club, who are owned by a Thai consortium backed by chairman Vichai Srivaddhanaprabha, could be able to celebrate their return to the English top-flight this weekend.

Leicester, who were last in the Premier League in 2004, will be promoted if QPR lose at Bournemouth and fourth placed Derby fail to beat Middlesbrough on Saturday.

Pearson’s team are unbeaten in 21 league games and already have 89 points, two more than Cardiff’s final total when they were promoted as Championship winners last season.

Leicester, beaten by Watford in the play-off semi-finals last term, took the lead in the 10th minute when Riyad Mahrez curled a left-footed shot into the far corner for his third goal since joining from Le Havre in January.

Michail Antonio’s low strike from the edge of the area sneaked past Kasper Schmeichel’s weak attempted save to draw Wednesday level in the 37th minute.

But Knockaert put Leicester ahead again in the 61st minute when the midfielder curled home a tremendous free-kick after Kieran Lee brought down Mahrez on the edge of the area.
